This stone patio was laid on an elevated concrete slab to provide a seamless floor height from the interior, thus optimizing the feel of an expanded kitchen and dining room. Laying the stone on this substrate also provides the required slope for water drainage and a permanent and uniform surface for the patio. The client selected a Montana slate for its color, texture and variable size and shape. The curved steps have lights in the risers to create a formal atmosphere. The patio campfire provides light and a warm gathering place on the lower patio section. A redwood pergola was installed for shade and helps create a dining space. The stone capped half-wall is outfitted with a natural gas hook-up and exterior outlets. New Pella Doors, both with Rocky Mountain Hardware, offer easy access to the living room and kitchen.

New cabinetry, built with clear alder and stained to the client's specifications, surround a gas insert fireplace with a stone hearth. More dramatic pieces of the Monatana slate were chosen for the fireplace, to create an uncontested focal point in the living room.
